Kerama National Park

"The crystal-clear sea that every instructor hopes you’ll experience at least once."
Located about 30 km west of Naha, this group of islands can be reached by boat in 30 minutes to 1 hour. Under normal sea conditions, visibility reaches around 30 meters, offering a variety of dive sites and vibrant marine ecosystems. Here, crystal-clear waters, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish are just the beginning. You may also encounter majestic sharks among the canyons and cave formations that define the area’s unique underwater landscape. Designated as a National Park in 2013, these islands play an essential role as a genetic sanctuary for the marine life surrounding Okinawa’s main island.

In winter, these waters become the breeding grounds of humpback whales. If you’re lucky, you might even hear their beautiful songs underwater.

Suitable for divers of all levels.

Manza

“A magical experience of light and landscape beneath the sea.”
Manza is one of the most famous dive sites in the central area of Okinawa’s main island. Among its highlights is the stunning “Dream Hole”, whose entrance is covered with hard corals and drops vertically down to about 25 meters, opening into a sandy bottom. Inside the cave, you may spot lobsters, gold-lined sea bream, and other marine life hiding in the shadows. As you exit the cave, you’ll be greeted by schools of bigeye fish shimmering near the entrance — the backlit blue glow creates a breathtaking scene, as if you were diving inside a blue cathedral.

Suitable for intermediate divers. Recommended for Advanced Open Water level and above.

Manzamo, located in Onna Village on Okinawa’s main island, is one of the area’s most scenic coastal attractions. Although its dive sites are not as well-known as those in the Kerama Islands, Manzamo is highly recommended for divers who wish to enjoy an equally impressive diving experience — without the worry of seasickness. The area features around 10 dive sites, all located just about 10 minutes by boat from the port. After each dive, the boat returns to the harbor for a short break, which makes it a great choice for divers who are sensitive to motion.

In addition to the sites mentioned above, “ Mini Dream Hole” is another fascinating spot featuring unique underwater topography. Here, divers may even encounter small reef sharks resting inside the cave, adding an extra thrill to the dive. Another highlight is “ Cross Line”, a dive site located inside the bay and closer to the shore. Because of its position, the water here is usually calm, even when other Manzamo sites are affected by strong currents. This sandy-bottom site is rich in macro life, including pipefish, gobies, and dragonets, offering plenty of delightful surprises for underwater photographers and keen observers.

Kouri island - USS Emmons

USS Emmons — Japan’s Largest Shipwreck
The USS Emmons is Japan’s largest intact shipwreck, resting quietly beneath the sea after more than 60 years. Its hull, gun turrets, and torpedo launchers remain remarkably well-preserved, allowing divers to witness the powerful traces of wartime history up close. Exploring the site offers a moving experience — a chance to feel the weight and significance of that era beneath the waves. The wreck lies at a depth of 35 to 45 meters, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced divers only.

Participation is limited to those aged 18 and above with an Advanced Open Water certification and at least 50 logged dives.

This warship once served in the United States Navy during World War II, playing an active role in the Pacific theater. During the Battle of Okinawa, the Emmons was heavily attacked by Japanese kamikaze aircraft, resulting in nearly 100 casualties among her crew. To prevent the ship’s technology and information from falling into enemy hands, the U.S. Navy made the decision to scuttle the vessel, sending her to rest on the seafloor — where she remains today as a silent witness to history.

It wasn’t until the year 2000 that a local fishing boat accidentally discovered an unusual oil leak rising from the sea floor. Upon investigation, divers found a 106-meter-long wreck — the USS Emmons. Since then, it has been recognized as the largest shipwreck dive site in Japan.

Today, the USS Emmons still rests on the seafloor with its hull, gun turrets, and torpedo launchers remarkably well preserved — even after more than 60 years underwater. These remnants of war remain profoundly moving, allowing divers to explore the traces of history and feel the weight of a bygone era beneath the waves.

The USS Emmons is a mysterious and captivating site that draws divers from around the world to witness its grandeur. This underwater relic is not only a popular destination for diving exploration, but also a place of reflection — a solemn reminder of the lasting impact of war.

Sunabe - Shore diving

“Explore the Underwater Post Box, UFO, and Temple”
Sunabe, located in Chatan Town about 30 minutes by car from Naha City, is also home to the popular “American Village” — a must-visit spot on any Okinawa travel itinerary. This area features three main dive sites: Sunabe No.1, Sunabe No.2 (Miyagi Coast), and Shinsuijo-mae (in front of the water purification plant).

Suitable for divers of all levels.

Sunabe No.1is an ideal dive site for beginners and those looking to gain experience. With an easy entry point, it’s also a great spot for introductory dives and non-certified divers. At the entry, chains are installed to assist divers during descent and ascent, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience. At the end of the chain, you’ll find a small drop-off leading to a sandy bottom about 6–8 meters deep. Right in the middle of this sandy area sits a retired underwater post box, adding a playful and memorable touch to the dive.

Sunabe No.2, also known as Miyagi Coast, is another popular dive site in the area. Although the entry point is rocky and can be a bit challenging, especially during low tide, it’s well worth the effort. Once you swim out through the channel, you’ll discover sloping fields of soft corals that grow deeper and denser as you go — forming what feels like a series of coral valleys that will completely immerse you in their beauty.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, the dive sites of Sunabe promise an unforgettable underwater experience. In this diverse and vibrant seascape, you’ll encounter beautiful corals and a wide variety of marine life, making you feel as if you’ve entered a magical underwater kingdom.
